  • Very beginner (Japanese)

    By Migroschrott
First impression when signing in and picking your language (Japanese in my case), I get two options: Basic & Advanced. I picked advanced since I’m at a N4-N3 level which is approaching intermediate, not advanced, but definitely not basic. Once selected, it directly takes you into a lesson without explaining what you’re going to learn. The first screen presents you with a vocabulary word and sounds fully turned on despite my volume rocker being turned off. Bad UX behavior, respect the users settings. That’s the second bad impression. In addition, the vocab presented is romanized spelling. I’d let it go if it was in Hiragana/Katakana without the Kanji but if you can’t read Hiragana/Katakana, you’re still at a very basic level, nowhere near advanced. Needless to say, I exited out of the course because that’s not doing anything for me. Then looking at the course outline you see in the overview, this whole course looks to be extremely beginner oriented. This won’t even get you to N5 level. So if you intend to learn Japanese and it’s your first exposure to it, maybe this app is ok. I can’t really tell because it’s too basic for me. If you’re looking for anything more advanced, the Japanese course is not for you. It would be helpful if they declared upfront the level of education you could expect.
  • Grammar?

I just wish that the Learn Grammar would become available a little bit earlier (on the Russian courses, in particular). It is very difficult to learn the structure to begin with and I’m facing a lot of problems in learning the verbs without there being a dedicated portion of my learning to conjugation. Does it become accessible in later courses? It doesn’t say I need premium, either..

  • Great language learning app

Memrise has been wonderful for teaching me Korean, French and Russian. It has simply labeled buttons and is very intuitive. It teaches what you actually need unlike some apps where they teach you words like ice cream, the names of animals, etc. when all you really need to do is introduce yourself and ask where a few places are. Memrise helps you do that and then gets on to the more advanced words. It gives you the characters and their sounds and gives basic words to really help you understand. Just absolutely outstanding.

  • Please fix!!

I actually love this app and would give it five stars if it wasn't for this issue; i played it for a while until i got to the second part where to seems to be locked for IOS users only. I think its unfair android and computer users have the entire app for free instead of people who have an ios. This paywall you have here for the ios mobil device is a little stupid. I would like to learn a language when im on the go instead of lugging a computer around or changing my iPhone to an android just to learn. Please fix this paywall problem. But fortunately i have my computer to use your site. But thats a lot more work. Maybe you’d get more people into it if it wasn't blocked by a paywall. Apparently this has been an issue since 2016.. cmon its 2019 it /should/ be fixed by now. But other than that i love the actual program, its something i can work on alongside Duolingo. Also. I recommend duolingo.. at least im not paywalled. ...yes i am salty about this situation.
  • Would give 5 stars, but...

❗️PLEASE FIX❗️ I’m learning Chinese, and although the vocab and phrases they’re teaching you may be effective, they don’t focus enough on the characters much at all, they’re just shown at the bottom of the screen. Also, when you have to type when a word is in Chinese, (ex.) Translate: No worries, then when you type the Chinese characters for it (没关系) it marks you incorrect because it only accepts the pinyin, which I think is not very effective because if you go to China, there isn’t going to be pinyin when you read signs. Please fix!
  • Wish the app still had mems...

    By Lothcat
As a visual learner, I found the flash card ‘mems’ to be extremely helpful. I wish there was a way to turn them on when learning in the app. As is, I’ve been having to use the web version on my phone, which is less than ideal. Kudos for being one of the only language apps to include ASL (even if it’s hidden and somewhat broken). Fix the course and allow me to use mems, and I’d gladly give this 5 stars.
  • Fun and super easy!

    By Ati Liz
So so happy that I found Memrise! This app makes learning new languages fun and easy by having all the proper components to learn a language. Having a video of a real person speaking the word or phrase is extremely important when learning a new dialect. It allows you to reflect on how the native speaker is saying it compared to how you are so you’re able to adjust sounds properly. Not only does Memrise include this, but it also has spelling questions and multiple choice questions. Worried about your spelling? Memrise has separate review tests for spelling and listening along with a timed review test as well. I would highly recommend this app for anyone looking to learn a new language or practice the language they’re learning in school. As a student myself I have found Memrise very useful as I am currently learning Italian (touching up on it), Portuguese (main land Portuguese), and Japanese (just for the fun of it!) Hopefully this helped many!
