  • Getting Frustrated Scribd!

I’ve also been a Scribd used for years, as many of these reviewers. I’ve always loved it, even through the many changes. EVEN when the audiobooks started getting sparse until your next renewal. This month though, has taken the cake. I have 5 (5!!!) audiobooks available to me In the young adult discover category. FIVE!!! I’m not even just talking about good books, these five are the crap books that are free to the public on any service. I mean, come on Scribd! I understand that you have to keep subscribers and that a good way to do that is to hold out the titles until they pay again. I GET IT! But to hold EVERY book out? What is the point in keeping it if I can’t use the app until the next billing cycle?? I had a billing issue (new debit card) so my app got cancelled and I had to restart it, so I’m not sure if this is just a punishment for being a “new user” in their eyes?! My other complaint is that there are so many series on the app that only have 1 book. Who in the heck is going to read the third book in a series and not read the first 2?? Get it together scribd, you can take the books away to make your money, but you won’t be making any if you piss off all your customers and they all delete! Go on and send me the scripted response of “We’re sorry to hear that you are disappointed, but there are always books to read” 🙄

Scribd is literally “Netflix for books”. It is the only app I use for consuming audiobooks.

  • Not as good as I thought

I received 2 months for free and absolutely loved the service. Yes I was frustrated when they removed titles and limited my reading without a heads up but I still read 2-4 books as audiobooks. When the free trial ended, I renewed it. On day 5 of that month I downloaded a title that skipped like a scratched CD. I just switched to a different title and went about my day. That evening I contacted Scribd by email. Ticket 227907. They do not give out a phone # which raised a red flag. The employee was clearly using a script. They asked me to send a screenshot of an audio issue. Ummm ?!? I answered many many questions. During one of my answers they realized my iOS wasn’t up to date. They would not discuss the audiobook issue any further without me updating my iOS. They refused to even look into the issue without me doing that. I have canceled my service. Great book selection but the poor customer just makes it not worth it. Ticket# 2279077
  • I loves Scribd, but it has a bug

Since the last update, there seems to be a bug with the highlighting feature. Sometimes it takes multiple attempts to highlight and sometimes the highlight feature does not work at all. Scribe as a service is spectacular and I cannot recommend it more. Just fix the app.

Unlimited means, and I quote: “not limited or restricted in terms of number, quantity, or extent. “ *Unlimited means: two audiobooks a month plus unlimited access to titles copied from Librivox. Librivox is super cool - a big catalog of 100% free audiobooks from the public domain. So yes, that means it’s perfectly legal for Scribd to copy them and use them to justify calling an extremely limited service “*unlimited”. Legal, yes. Fair to the consumer, however? You decide. I’ve been a member for years. I’ve avidly recommended them to everyone I know. You used to get one audiobook and three ebooks for your 8.99 a month, with certain titles unlimited. You knew whether you were listening to something free or something that would use up your credits. You could preview a book, and then it would ask you if you wanted to use a credit to finish listening to it. I was fine with it. I would listen to free stuff, save up credits, and then binge on an awesome series. There used to be some cool stuff in the free audiobooks catalog too- some obscure British titles that I greatly enjoyed. No more. Now it’s *unlimited. You can’t see which titles are truly unlimited (although It seems to be anything not a classic). You can’t save up credits to listen to an audiobook series. You get two, maybe three, sometimes one audiobook before your browse screen suddenly has nothing interesting in it. I’ve been an avid reader since early childhood. I’ve already read all the classics, and if I wanted to revisit them, I’d do so straight from Librivox, and support them. The switch was nearly a year ago. I held on, hoping that they would return to the Scribd I knew and loved. It isn’t happening. Maybe my account getting cancelled will send the message they need to hear.
  • Great customer service

I downloaded Scribd quickly for an in-class assignment where I needed my textbook and cancelled my subscription the same day, or so I thought. I noticed I was charged at the end of the month. I contacted customer service and they got back to me in less than 24 hours. They were friendly and notified me I had not correctly cancelled the subscription. They voided the charge and cancelled it for me. So thank you Tyia (support desk)!! I appreciated your help. Side note- On the actually app, I found my textbook and it was easy to use

When I joined, I was blown away by the selection. I primarily use the audiobooks because I travel as part of my job. However, after a week, most of my saved books were “unavailable”. Then, my selection was reduced to books that are typically free, ie, self published, and public domain. It’s still not a bad service if you only read but if you’re looking for newer or popular books and audiobooks, look elsewhere.
