After lots of research into second line options to run my small business on, I chose OpenPhone because of the well designed and easy on the eyes app, simple but robust offering, and the promise of good service. So far so good. Customer service has been EXTREMELY communicative and ready answer questions and help with any issues.
Excellent customer service
So far I really like OpenPhone. So many great features and very affordable. Anytime I have a question the customer service is excellent. I would definitely recommend this to everyone!
OpenPhone is my #1 Choice
I tried many options in my search to finally move away from VOIP and go 100% WIFI/Internet for phone calls and for text. OpenPhone is now my top choice for business calls. Here are the Pros and Cons/Considerations.
Unlike Line2, it works with the bluetooth in my car. And, it has great sound quality. And, they aren’t trying to extort more money if you need more than 1 lines or if you need the app to work across different devices. (Love, love the Line2 interface but it’s downsides were a dealbreaker.)
Unlike Google Voice, OpenPhone does not rely upon having a cell phone after sign up.
Unlike iPlum, calls and texts are unlimited; no credits to buy. (IPlum is great for vanity numbers though.)
Unlike TextPlus+, I am not getting bogus calls for other people or spammers to excess. Nor am I having problems with no show texts that are delayed or never arrive at all. And there are no advertisements. (Text Plus is $1.99 per year to keep your number, though so... it has its pluses.)
The toll free option is great for businesses. And, the notion of a toll free number for calls and for texts is mind blowing.
All of the communications with a person are all in the same thread - regards of whether it’s voice, text, or voice mail.
Voice transcription is fantastic! I love being able to read voice mails if calls come in when I am not available or on a conference call.
The help files are actually quite good. They are built into the app and also online. If the software is not designed to solve the problem, then sending an email to Customer Service will help resolve the matter. They do not, however, has an online signon for account administration.
CONs & Considerations
The interface takes some getting used to. You may accidentally call someone or forget where to find the dialer until you get used to it. (Line2 has the best looking interface hands down.)
To ‘validate’ your account, you must have a cell phone that is actively under a paid plan. It will NOT take a virtual or internet phone of any kind.
Unlike Google Voice which always works, sometimes this account can be used for verification texts and sometimes the text never arrives.
If you want to pay for two lines that ring independently (instead of giving people two numbers to call just you), you will need to sign up for a second account using a -different- cell phone line to use for validation. And pay 2 bills.
This phone app does NOT support call waiting. If you get another call or if the person that you are talking to tries to switch you to another line, then it will cut off. Honestly, I rather love this. I’m not a fan of interrupted conversations. I think it’s rude and inconsiderate.
And, to avoid Apple and iTunes hassles, I highly recommend signing up online and then downloading the App. The app’s sign-up wizard does not play nice with the Apple’s Family Sharing or lines with an existing account.
No matter how much I play with the settings, all my calls go straight to voicemail. Can’t believe I wasted money on subscribing to this service.
OpenPhone for the win
By Nick Bentley
Let me preface this review with some background. I've had multiple orgs that I've been a part of for the better part of my life as a college student and even more so post graduation. Many of these are nonprofits or student groups that I dedicated my time to free of charge, because those orgs have very little money. Because of that, they also typically don't have any sort of phone infrastructure. I've had Google Voice, tried GoDaddy's offering, and even had more than one phone at a certain point. None of these worked nearly as well or were nearly as convenient as OpenPhone is.
I've got one phone number on the platform, which I use for pretty much everything for each org I'm involved in. It sits in my email signature & gets plenty of calls and texts every day. Over the time I've had OpenPhone, I've not had one issue in making a call, receiving a call, or texting. It all just works. When you're juggling so many things at once, the "just works" aspect of a tool you use is paramount. If it didn't just work, I'd be writing an entirely different review.
10/10 would use OpenPhone for all my non-personal phone lines. Keep up the good work team. I look forward to more features & (hopefully!) a web version and maybe the ability to add employees to the account (vs sharing the password). 🎉❤️
Didn’t expect how good this would be
I always used my cell for work and didn’t think it was a big deal. But there’s so many little things! (knowing when an unknown number is for work, having a different voicemail message when we’re open vs closed, customer support is greet too). I can’t go back.
These folks don’t pay lip service to user experience: the world class attention to detail speaks for itself. This app is the best in its category, yet the customer service is attentive and responsive. One request: don’t change! 👍🏼
And great customer service. The app is easy to use and very affordable. It works well and I use it for my business currently.
I want to like it

I travel overseas a lot for my company, so the idea behind this app/service is great. Texting works fine, as expected. But the phone calls are so bad that it is unintelligible for both sides. I’ve had to just use my Skype number this week because it sounds like we are talking underwater or something. Probably going to have to cancel, unfortunately.
Great customer service

I’m starting up a new online business and was researching business phone numbers companies. I read up on OpenPhone-their history, how they got started and what they are trying to do, and especially liked how they ask their customers what they would like to see included in a phone service. Their blog is so “real” and the follow-up with every blogger that is provided tells me this company is truly on it and wants to see their customers be happy with their service, as well as succeed in their own businesses. Thank you OpenPhone for the reasonably priced, ease of set-up and use of your service, as well as your professionalism and approachability of your customer service and product. Keep up the awesome work! Very thankfully, Linda
